General Description
Gumbo Limbo volunteer assignments assist all departments on property. Each assignment requires the ability to warmly welcome our visitors and provide interpretational information about the exhibits, habitats and animal ambassadors. All knowledge needed for each assignment will be provided during orientation and subsequent training. Volunteers often work in small groups under the general supervision of the volunteer coordinator and/or other GLNC staff.
Position Duties
Interact with visitors, providing accurate information about Gumbo Limbo Nature Center exhibits and marine/coastal environments
Educate about conservation and behaviors that visitors could modify to help conserve the environment
Properly identify fish and marine animals in the aquariums
Provide excellent customer service to all visitors

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and the mission
Willingness to learn about native plant and animal species of Southeast Florida
Able to educate about plant and animal species of Southeast Florida appropriately and effectively
Ability to communicate information clearly to visitors of all ages, backgrounds, etc.
Education, Experience, and Training
Must be at least 16 years old
Interested candidates must complete a City of Boca Raton volunteer application and attend a prospective volunteer interview at GLNC with the Volunteer Coordinator
The applicant must be approved by the Volunteer Coordinator
Must complete a level 2 background check and be approved by the City of Boca Raton
Must attend a mandatory orientation
Physical Demands
Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures, harsh weather conditions, noise, dust, pollen, animals, plants and insects resulting in possible cuts, bites, or stings. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, except for those who use a wheelchair.
Time Commitment
Must commit to at least 50 hours of service throughout 6 consecutive months, ongoing.
