The Social Worker Assistant is required to work under the direct supervision of the Social Worker. Responsibilities include adhering to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility, ensuring the safety of students, implementing the Windham Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations, and directives, assisting with managing the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain an advantageous learning environment, maintaining accurate and complete records as required, assisting with assessing student learning on a continual basis and identifying areas of intervention if needed, following the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Windham Board of Education, maintaining respect for confidential information, assisting with designing instruction to meet the needs of all students through both individual and small group settings as needed, maintaining a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the educator and learner, maintaining a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior, and practicing in accordance with the Standards for School Social Work Practice in Connecticut, as developed by the CT DOE. Other duties as assigned by Administrator and/or Superintendent include making contact with the public with tact and diplomacy, maintaining respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., home and discipline situations, medical background, and family history, interacting in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents, and promoting good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.
Knowledge/skills include the ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, effective, active listening skills, ability to work effectively with others, organizational and problem-solving skills, ability to work effectively with others, basic computer skills, small group instruction, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and ability to work well with students, families, and all other stakeholders.
Qualifications include an associate's in social work required, bachelors in social work preferred, social work experience preferred, and a thorough knowledge of present practices and current trends in social work. Experience in working directly with students and families is required. Appropriate communication skills both oral and written. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
